We’ve recently expanded our booklet offering to include brochures, pamphlets, books and magazines – but what exactly is the difference between these print tools and what are the best ways for using each type? Here’s a quick rundown of all these booklet types to help inform your decision to print.

What is a Booklet?

A booklet is a small, thin book with a cover that gives information on a particular subject, often used in marketing. Typically, booklets have no more than 120 pages.

‘Booklet’ is an umbrella term that refers to a broad range of different kinds of multi-page printed documents that are bound together to create a book. All of the printed products we’ll be defining in this article are types of booklet.

Booklets come in a range of sizes but are normally no larger than A4 and no smaller than A6.

What are Booklets Used for?

As they’re such a broad category, booklets can be used for many different things, including all of the booklet types mentioned in this blog, and uses such as catalogues and wedding and funeral orders of service.

What is a Brochure?

A brochure is a small stapled booklet that gives information about a company’s product offering. Often very image-based, the saddle-stitch binding makes marketing brochures a more affordable option.

However, it’s very easy to create luxury brochures by choosing thicker, more premium stocks (paper types) and adding laminate finishes – which are special coatings applied to the top of the covers to create a protective and impactful effect.

What are Brochures Used for?

Brochures are used to advertise the benefits and services of a business to customers and potential customers. Examples include hotel and travel brochures, and sales brochures.

Brochures are normally distributed through the post or given out in person by the company, for example, travel agents will hand out their brochures to customers to take home and consider their holiday options.

What is a Pamphlet?

A pamphlet is a small folded booklet that’s used to inform or educate an audience. Pamphlets are a tri-fold document – meaning it’s one sheet folded twice to create three panels on each side. These panels are often referred to as pages, meaning pamphlets have 6 printed pages.

Pamphlets are small, unbound booklets used to convey one quick message, rather than everything about a business.

What are Pamphlets Used for?

Pamphlets are usually educational documents used to inform about a singular update, argument or piece of advice. Although often used in medical settings and schools, they can also be used promotionally, for example to give information about an event or sale.

What is a Book?

A book is a set of folded sheets bound to a spine of a cover with glue. The cover is usually thicker than the stock of the inside pages as it’s designed to keep the inside of the book protected.

This is also known as perfect binding because of the sleek effect created as all of the pages (inside and the cover) are cut to line up perfectly.

This is a more premium type of booklet as the glue binding makes it a durable option that’s built to last. You can also print more pages in this kind of booklet because of the sturdy spine and thicker covers.

What are Books Used for?

Due to the number of pages books allow in printing, there’s a lot of opportunity for showcasing your business. Many of the businesses we print for use them for product catalogues, prospectuses and employee handbooks, as well as more creative uses like colouring books and children’s books.

What is a Magazine?

A magazine is a thin perfect bound booklet, usually with thin glossy pages. Magazines feature a wide range of content, from articles, case studies and stories to adverts and are written for a specific audience. They are usually published on a schedule, like weekly, quarterly or yearly.

What are Magazines Used for?

In a business sense, magazines are used to give industry-relevant updates and information through articles and case studies, as well as company newsletters.
