How to design folded business cards
No matter whether you’ll be designing the folded business cards yourself, or you have a design team who will be creating the artwork for you, we’ve created a quick checklist of things you’ll have to remember when setting up your blank canvas.
If your design is portrait, the finished size is 110mm x 85mm, so set your artwork up at 116mm x 91mm. This will add a 3mm bleed to both sides. If your design is going to be landscape, the finished size is 170mm x 55mm – set your artwork up at 176mm x 61mm. Again, this will ensure you have a 3mm bleed.
You will also have to set your folded business card artwork up as a spread. Remember to set your colour mode as CMYK and use high resolution images only (at least 300dpi). Anything less will affect the finished printed product.
If you’re using any bespoke or on brand fonts in your design, don’t forget to flatten or embed them, as we may not have them on file here at instantprint.
*Your cards will arrive with a crease, ready to fold.
What if I don’t have a fold out business card design?
No design? No problem! We have a wealth of templates available for you to use. If you or your designers are using specialist programmes, you’re in luck! We have blank templates ready to go for Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and InDesign. Not using one of these? We also have a PDF template available.
What paper type should I choose for my folded business cards?
The paper stock you choose completely depends on the look and feel you are trying to achieve for your business. Both of the options we have available for our foldable business cards are 350gsm, which is a heavy-duty paper type. Ideal if you’re looking for a long-lasting option to hold your contact information, appointment dates and times or loyalty card stamps.
We have uncoated and silk* options at instantprint, and each offers a premium, luxury feel to them. Whichever you choose, you are guaranteed of a quality product.
*We would recommend using the silk option for business cards.
Still unsure how to set up your file? We've created support guides on our blog to help you with everything from bleed to resolution. Click on the guide you'd like to read to open them in a brand new window.
What is the smallest font size I should use on my custom folded business cards?
You will want your existing and potential customers to be able to see your contact information clearly. That’s why we would recommend using a font size no smaller than 7pt. This will ensure that the wording you have printed is legible.
How are they printed?
Your artwork goes on an incredible journey here at the instantprint headquarters; from arriving with our quality check team to being passed down to the printing room. We have a dedicated business card room in our production facility where all our fold out business cards are printed on our Fujifilm Jet Press.
When will my business cards be delivered?
Fold out business card orders approved by 6:30pm will be dispatched for delivery the next working day. Delivery takes a further working day. For example, if you approve your order by 6:30pm on a Monday, we’ll dispatch your order on Tuesday and it’ll be delivered on Wednesday.
How do I upload my fold out business card design?
We’ve made the ordering and uploading process quick and simple. When you add your business cards to your basket, you’ll be prompted to upload your artwork. Or, if you’re looking for other business stationery and want to continue shopping, you can upload your artwork at a later time.
