As the days grow longer and brighter, many of us feel the urge to reset, refresh and start anew. But while spring cleaning is second nature at home, our latest research shows UK workplaces are lagging behind.

We surveyed 1,000 UK office workers and found that nearly 7 in 10 (68%) believe a spring clean boosts productivity, yet many offices are still stuck in winter mode.

The Productivity Problem Hiding in Plain Sight

Despite the clear benefits, workplace clutter remains a widespread issue:

  • 42% of employees say their workspace is cluttered or disorganised
  • 1 in 3 (34%) report that mess increases their stress levels
  • 29% say a messy environment makes it harder to focus

This highlights a clear gap. While employees are ready for a reset, many businesses are not providing the support or structure to make it happen.

Why a Clean Workspace Matters More Than You Think

Spring cleaning is not just about aesthetics, it has a direct impact on how people feel and perform at work.

Our research found that employees who described their workspace as clean and organised were 45% more likely to feel motivated compared to those in cluttered environments.

Sean Kachmarski, our Health and Wellbeing Trainer, explains:
“There is a strong psychological link between our physical environment and how we feel at work. A cluttered or chaotic space can subconsciously increase stress and reduce focus, whereas a clean, refreshed environment can help people feel more in control and energised.”

With hybrid working now the norm for many, expectations around workspace quality have evolved. Employees want environments that support focus, wellbeing and productivity, but many workplaces have not caught up.

Businesses Are Missing a Simple Win

Despite the clear benefits, only 21% of businesses actively encourage seasonal workspace refreshes. This means most employees are left to manage their own environments without guidance or support from their organisation.

For businesses looking to improve engagement, productivity and wellbeing, this is a low effort, high impact opportunity.

How to Bring Spring Into the Workplace

The good news is that small changes can make a big difference. Here are a few simple ways to embrace a seasonal reset:

1. Organise a Team Declutter Day
Create a shared sense of reset by encouraging teams to clear out and refresh their spaces together.

2. Introduce Smart Organisation Tools
Labelled storage, desk planners and simple systems can help maintain order long after the clean up.

3. Refresh Visual Elements
Updating signage, wall art or branded materials can instantly revitalise a workspace and reinforce company culture.

4. Promote Clear Desk Policies
These support cleanliness and improve data security while creating a more professional environment.

A Fresh Start for Business and People

Spring cleaning should not be seen as just a personal habit, it is a strategic opportunity.

From rethinking office layouts to updating printed materials, even small changes can signal a fresh start, boost morale and improve performance.

As workplaces continue to evolve, one thing is clear: a clean and organised environment is not a luxury, it is a foundation for success.
