Refining your flyer design can make a huge difference to its success, and the way people think about your brand. From clear incentives to buy to an attention-grabbing design, we’ve gathered our top tips to show you how to design a great flyer.

 

What Should a Flyer Include?

  • An Eye-Catching Headline

    If your flyers are not immediately engaging, the message you’ve spent so long crafting won’t get read. Make sure your headline is short and to the point and also the largest text on your design. Try making the headline a different colour to the rest of the text so it really stands out.

  • Your Company Logo

    A successful flyer design is nothing if readers don’t know who it’s from. Add your company logo and make sure it’s obvious where customers can find out more. Brand your flyers’ colours and fonts so they match everything else your business issues, so there is a clear link between everything.
     
  • A Clear Layout

    There are loads of different ways to create an easy-to-read layout. Boxing off important pieces of information, adding borders and even bullet pointing your lists are all fantastic options that will improve the usability of your flyer.
     
  • A Strong Call to Action

    What do you want people to do after reading your flyer? The best way to seal the deal, is to (strongly) suggest what your reader should do next. Examples of strong calls to action include, “Redeem Your Discount in Store Today” or “Follow Us on Social Media”.
     
  • Images and Other Visuals

    A huge tip for improving your flyer design is to show visually rather than tell wherever possible. Images of your products, graphs and illustrations are all fantastic ways of creating more interest.

  • A Testimonial

    A testimonial, or positive review, of your business can be incredibly persuasive. People trust other people, so having someone else’s opinion (even if it’s one you’ve handpicked) on your flyer shows you’re a trustworthy source.
     
  • A Key Message

    Pick one key thing you want your reader to know. Have you got a sale on? Are you showing off a new product? Or are you just introducing your brand to new eyes? Don’t try and put everything all on one flyer – otherwise, you could risk overcrowding your design and putting off potential customers.
     
  • Your Contact Information

    Make sure people know how to find you or find out more about your company. If you have a website or social media, make sure to include this information. Or, if you want people to visit your business, include an address too. It’s also good practice to include an email address or phone number.
     

How to Write a Flyer for Your Business

You chose certain values as part of your brand guidelines because you wanted customers to see you in a certain way. You can reflect these values in the writing.

  1. Catch Attention Immediately

    Your heading is going to be the largest bit of copy on your flyer. But that’s not always enough to really grab your reader’s attention. Make sure what you’re saying is really relevant and relatable to your target audience. 

    You could also try to include a few powerful words or phrases that attract attention like: Quick, Easy, Sale, Free, How to, Unlock the Secret to. 
     
  2. Think About Your Brand

    Everything from the colours you use to your tone of voice should reflect how you want people to think of you. This is your brand. Your brand values will determine your writing style: will it be fun and informal or professional and to the point?
     
  3. Intrigue Your Audience

    To keep people reading, it’s a great idea to hint that something exciting is coming later in the text. Phrases like ‘find out more here’, ‘more on that in a second’, or even adding questions are a fantastic way of driving your reader through the text right to the end.
     
  4. Make it Catchy

    Keep sentences short. Not only will this make your message more memorable, it makes reading your flyer an easier, more positive experience. Confusing potential clients with overly complicated sentences will put them off and won’t encourage them to read the rest of your flyer.
     
  5. Say What Makes You Unique

    What makes your business different from competitors? These are your USPs (Unique Selling Points). They can include the product range you sell, the service you give and even your delivery or opening times.
     
  6. Be the Expert

    Authority and trustworthiness are important factors in persuading your reader to make a purchase. One way to do this is to shout about any awards or accolades you might have received. 
     
  7. Say How You'll Benefit the Reader

    Talk about how your products will benefit the customer. For example, don’t tell them how many tissues they’ll receive in the box, tell them they’ll never get caught short with a cold ever again!
     
  8. Offer a Discount

    What’s more persuasive than saving money? Not only is offering a discount or a free product a great way of encouraging customers to spend with you, it also allows you to track the success of your campaign. Track the voucher code to measure how well your flyer has performed.
     
  9. Create a Sense of Urgency

    Which of these is better?
    •    Here’s 20% off your next order
    •    The clock is ticking on your 20% voucher, act fast or miss out!

    The second one uses FOMO (fear of missing out) to drive a customer to make an order ASAP. From time-limited offers to while-stocks-lasts, there are loads of ways you can speed up someone’s decision to make a purchase with you. 
     
  10. Proofread!

    Ever printed out a letter and spotted a mistake as soon as you looked at it? Imagine that, but you’ve just printed of thousands of flyers. To avoid that stomach-dropping feeling, always take care when proofreading. It’s a great idea to get someone else to run their eyes over it too just in case you’ve missed something.

 

 

How to Make an Eye-Catching Flyer

 

  1. Start with a Plan

    Get some blank paper and a pencil and sketch out how you want your flyer design to look. The better the plan, the easier and quicker it’ll be to create.
     
  2. Think About the Size and Shape

    Flyers are available in a huge range of sizes and shapes. Choose from quirky squares or a long DL (the exact size of standard envelopes), or go for the classic A5. Whatever suits your marketing need.
     
  3. Decide on a Colour Scheme

    Using your brand colours, decide what colours you’ll use for the background, the text and your headers. You can check which colours go together by using a colour wheel, like the one below.

    According to colour theory, complimentary colours are opposite each other on the wheel. The wheel is also split into warm colours on one side and cold colours on the other, which makes it perfect for creating a winning colour palette
     

     

  4. Choose Your Imagery

    High quality images are crucial for printed marketing. That’s why we suggest using ones with a minimum of 300dpi resolution.

    We also recommend checking the sources of all assets to make sure they’re the highest quality. If you use search engines, apply a resolution filter. Then you can always double check the file’s properties after you’ve downloaded it.
     
  5. Place Your Copy

    When placing your text on your flyer design, keep your key message in mind. As much as you want the design to look good, it also needs to be clear and easy-to-read.

  6. Consider the Typography

    Just like the colours you choose, fonts can also say a lot about your brand. The psychology behind typography centres around the idea that certain types of fonts trigger emotions, so picking the right one is extremely important.
     
  7. Make Your Call to Action Stand Out

    One of the most important parts of your flyer design, the call to action should stand out from the rest of the copy. Try making it bigger, switch up your colours or place it in a box to let readers know it’s important.
