Paper Glossary

gsm -  is an abbreviation for "grams per square metre", i.e the weight of the paper.  As a general rule the heavier the paper the better the quality. The quality of paper however does vary between makes - For example supermarket saver paper will feel very different to a premium brand with the same weight.

Gloss - Simply a glossy finish to the paper. This can make your product stand out  and is most commonly used on products such as flyers and photographs.

Laid - Papers with a "grid" pattern in the sheet, resulting from the pulp resting against wires on the papermaking mould screen.

Microns - The measurement used to describe the thickness of a piece of paper. This is sometimes used as an alternative to "gsm". Generally the thickness of a piece of paper in microns will be similar to its weight in gsm.

Matt
- Quite simply matt paper has no noticeable finish, i.e. not shiny. Matt is the most popular finish for business stationary

NCR - This is an abbreviation for "No Carbon Required". This special type of paper eliminated the need for a carbon sheet when a copy of something is required. This paper is most commonly used for invoices and delivery notices.

Opaque - This is normally used to describe envelopes and means that there is a pattern printed onto the inside of the envelope to prevent anyone being able to read the contents if held up to a light.

Silk - An option in between a gloss and a matt finish.

Wove - Papers which show no fine "laid" lines running through the sheet when held to the light.
